The Hubble space telescope is currently the most powerful space based scientific visual observation platform. For 25 years it has been sending us images that deepen our understanding of the cosmos and challenge our ideas about physics. Some of the most breathtaking views of the galaxies and nebula that exist in the the vast tapestry of space have been discovered with this amazing window into the sea of existence.
The Hubble Deep Field View images are perhaps some of the most awe inspiring once you understand how they are acquired. When scientists want to look deep in to space they find a dark patch of the sky, about the size of a postage stamp, and point the telescope at that one spot for for a combined total of 50 days. The telescope collects ancient light as it stares into what seems to be only blackness to the naked eye. But something magical happens once all those photons are collected and viewed as a single image.
The image above contains 5,500 galaxies, not stars, but galaxies. each one with millions, billions, and in some cases trillions of stars not unlike our own sun.
